Christmas Cup in Cebu

As announced a couple of days before the actual event, Mineski held a Christmas Cup for all its branches all over the Philippines (except for Cagayan de Oro, that had to cancel because of Sendong).

A total of 15 teams participated in the tournament,
and the Top 8 from the group stages were:
-It's Pro Time (Mineski Cebu)
- Team X
- Cube (Cube DotA)
- Champion daan
- Otenians
- Charge to Experience
- Stigma
- KYLD

Click here for reference on an old Mineski tournament post, dated October.

It's Pro Time grabbed the Championship and proved that they're currently the best in Cebu. iPT is also informally known as Mineski Cebu, an all-star combination of an ex-Mineski player, 2 ex-Latos players and 2 ex-Stigma players.

Roster:
Michael Ross
Jundell Navaja
Chrisostomo Tan Jr.
Sidney Ledesma
Rito Niere

Cube made a surprising rise to the 1st Runner-up spot in a close semi-finals match between another top team Stigma. "Cube" is a Professional Cebu StarCraft II Clan that adopted NotSoSneaky and are usually referred to as Cube DotA to avoid confusion with the SC2 team.

Roster:
Lloyd Agas
Don Comaingking
Peter Pacana
Wilfred Misterio
Chrys Suico
Gama Rae Comaingking
Edd Mark Peromingan

Stigma made a great comeback with their new member, ex-Latos and ex-ZeitGeist, Mr. Josh Groban. In this Mineski tournament, they have proven that they're still one of the top teams to beat.

Roster:
Heinrich
Ahmed Disangcopan
Jett Apor
Carlo Jim Fibra
Franz Dela Torre

After this tournament, the Cebu DotA community is revved up and ready to rise again.

StarCraft II Cebu Invasion Spotlight

GameVolution Inc.'s pre-season tournament, the StarCraft II Cebu Invasion, gathered players from all over the Queen City. SC2 enthusiasts from all walks of life joined the event and paved the way to a new age in Cebu competitive gaming.

Our very own StarCraft Broodwar Legend bagged the championship and proved, once and for all, that he's still got swag.

Open Tournament Champion:

The-By-Who-Lived

Byron, now known as CubeBy (CubeSalt in the WCG Cebu qualifiers) said that doesn't remember how he started playing but he knows that it was just for fun. Although he has had countless merits for Broodwar (including representing the Philippines in the World Cyber Games), his greatest SC2 achievement so far was winning the GameVolution Inc. tournament. His biggest disappointment or setback is his faulty internet connection; he says that he suddenly gets disconnected while in game (in turn, resulting to a loss). His training regimen? Discipline and watching VOD.
His message to aspiring gamers: Let's play!
Shout-out: "Thank you to GameVolution Inc. and all the sponsors! XOXO"

1st Runner-Up:
Dione +1

Leonell, better known as CubeDione, is the captain of Cebu's StarCraft II team Cube. He started playing arcades with his brother way back and since then he's been playing competitvely. Although he has been a competitive StarCraft player ever since Broodwar, his greatest SC2 achievement was being the champion in the WCG qualifiers held in Cebu. He generously gave his prize money and slot to his good friend CubeBy, who, in turn, won the fourth place of the tournament. He only trains 10 to 20 hours a week due to his busy schedule; and he manages to keep a well-balanced love and gaming life. His girlfriend, Jen, is a familiar sight to all SC2 players as she is always beside him at tournaments/ special e-Sports events.
His message to aspiring gamers: Do your best and never give up!
Shout-out: "Team Cube fighting and Cebuano Gamers Fighting! Get ready for war, We will destroy everyone in 2012."

2nd Runner-Up:
The Last Protoss Standing

Roland, better known as CubeRixilius, is one of the best Protoss players in team Cube. He started competitive gaming upon the release of SC2 and his greatest achievement in this game has been winning $20 in an online tournament. Like CubeBy, he also experiences internet connection problems, which would sometimes make him feel frustrated. His training regimen is watching all tournament VOD's, downloading latest pro replays, mastering one build order at a time.
His message to aspiring gamers: Practice practice practice so you will reach master's league then maybe you can compete.
Shout-out: "A big shout-out to all 3rd year EE's!"

Bronze-Silver-Gold (Novice) Tournament Champion:
Jack The Reaper

Jess, better known as JackDReaper, is one of the best novice Terran players in Cebu. He is currently not in any SC2 teams. He enumerated his gaming history from family computer, cellular phone games, to VCD player with games, random gaming consoles, to PC games(Dungeon Siege, Age of Empires, Empire Earth, Legacy of Kain, SkiFree, Zeek the Geek, Hangman, Hangaroo, Starcraft 1 & SC:BW(nangambisyon ghapn nga lamposon ang Campaign), Ragnarok Online, Gunbound, DotA, Warcraft III then Starcraft II. Suffice to say he like to play games a lot. His greatest achievement so far is winning GVI SC2 Invasion BSG Tournament. He says that his biggest disappointment is not being able to improve for a long time.
His message to aspiring gamers: Don't push too far, take one step at a time, make it an investment, find where you want to be, and when you do, GO FOR IT!
Shout-out: "Shout-outs: Big thanks ni God, prayers are very powerful. Thanks sa akong lalabs nga si Jeca nga gkuyogan jud ko all the way pagtourney (Thanks for my love Jeca, who stayed with me all the way during the tournament). Thanks ni Marco para sa constructive criticism, Lester para sa humorous criticism, Michael para sa forever account ug challenge-challenge, Rey sa pag suporta, Mark sa pag suporta, Arnie sa pag suporta, Jeff sa pag suporta, and of course sa sponsors PYRO Works, GOLS internet cafe, ug sa Team Cube ug Gamevolution., Inc for the opportunity!

Mineski Professional Gaming League Cebu recap

Earlier this June, Mineski created a big opportunity for Cebuano gaming by opening a Mineski Infinity cyber cafe in Talamban.

This is just a little recap for those that have been living under a rock (or those that have just been aware of the Cebu DotA competitive scene).

The MIOT (Mineski Infinity Opening Tournament), held last June 25, 2011 was, by far, the biggest tournament in local history, gathering 72 teams all over Cebu (with the exception of Latos, the reigning Cebu DotA team back then).

The tournament had no registration fee, the top 3 teams received medals and Mineski gear; while the tournament champion received a free trip to Manila (along with Latos) to participate in the MPGL (Mineski Professional Gaming League) tournament the following month. After 2 days of grueling matches, Stigma was crowned champion.

Latos and Stigma players in MPGL 3-6 (Manila)
The following month, July, Stigma and Latos participated in MPGL 3-6. They played good games but unfortunately didn't make it to the Top 8. After MPGL 3-6, Mineski Infinity owner, Raymond Tambis, wanted local players to get exposure to Manila players and teams.

To those that don't know, Manila is not only the capital of the Philippines but also the capital and pioneer of Philippine E-Sports.

With the vision of improving provincial gaming in mind, Mineski implemented a series of tournaments in Cebu (that happened every second week of the succeeding months: August, September and October). But who knew this opened the doors to the most volatile and most surprising team swap/disbandment/player changes.

MPGL Cebu 1-1 (August 13-14, 2011) opened with Exellon as the surprising champion. Stigma, the team that drove Latos to the loser's bracket and eventually it's fall to the 4th spot, gained a lot of recognition in that tournament although they only came in second. TNS, the revival of a legendary Cebuano team, came in third.

A few days after the loss of Latos in MPGL Cebu 1, Latos members Ninja, Balot (also known as Kenorange) and Nivram announced that they were leaving Latos to form Zeit Geist (taking TNS points but disbanding the said team). But Latos and TNS weren't the only ones with roster changes, Exellon and Stigma (due to one reason or another, which would be too much of a hassle to discuss in detail) did too.
Because of the roster changes in the top teams, team Kabu was formed (with players that were formerly from Exellon, Stigma and Latos).

MPGL Cebu 1-2 (September 10-11, 2011) was by far the most scorching tournament. Grudge matches from teams with former teammates were all the rage. The shout casting was almost as emotional as the players themselves who formed some of the teams at the last minute. But the disbandment of Latos was not in vain, team Zeit Geist (champion) tied the top score with Exellon (previous champion). Stigma, unfortunately, didn't make it past the group stage and Kabu still managed to hold unto the 4th spot despite player problems.
  1. Zeit Geist (TnS) - 40 pts. / + 25
  2. Exellon - 40 pts. / + 15
  3. Barney - 22 pts. / + 18
  4. Kabu - 20 pts. / + 8
  5. Stigma - 18 pts.
  6. Team Back Up - 12 pts. / + 12
  7. Thumbs Down - 10 pts. / + 10
  8. Synchronized - 10 pts.
  9. Nemesis - 8 pts.
  10. Harss - 6 pts. / + 6
  11. Point Click Kill - 6 pts.
  12. DnMd - 4 pts. / + 4
MPGL Cebu 1-3 (October 8-9, 2011) is definitely a tournament to watch out for.

With the teams changing players again, how will they fair at this extremely competitive stage?
